2016 Day 16 – Over the border

Over the border
It is always midnight or noon –
A midnight with no stars,
A noon with no shadow.
Over the border
There is only harsh summer
Or bitter winter.
Over the border
We hear only cacophony
Or silence.
Over the border
We are doomed to either
Macho posturing
Or meek submission.
But the children whisper
(Carefully, carefully,
When no-one can hear them)
Fairy tales of twilight
Blurred edges.
Over the border
The children whisper
Of spring blossom, autumn leaves.
The children whisper
Of music and the sound of laughter.
Over the border
The children whisper
(Quietly, quietly,
hiding in corners)
Of lives lived beyond roles,
Without harsh divisions.
The children whisper
And plan and dream
Of crossing the border.

Notes: The prompt was to fill out an ‘Almanac Questionnaire’ which solicits concrete details about a specific place (real or imagined). Then write a poem incorporating or based on one or more of your answers. I used a couple of the questions, (here), very loosely as the starting point for this dystopia.
