2016 Day 9 – As Good As It Gets?

That this may be as good as it will get
Fills me with grief for things that cannot last,
Predicting futures tainted with regret
And as today becomes remembered past
The prospect of the things I stand to lose
Fills me with grief for things that cannot last.
I tell myself that I am free to choose
The path my future takes, and yet I fear
The prospect of the things I stand to lose.
I watch the life I dreamed of disappear.
Still holding on to precious hope, I see
The path my future takes, and yet I fear.
I cannot guess what will become of me.
Looking ahead of me, I think I know.
Still holding on to precious hope, I see.

No Christmas time, in all a world of snow.
Looking ahead of me, I think I know
That this may be as good as it will get:
Predicting futures tainted with regret.

Notes: the prompt was ‘Today, I challenge you to write a poem that includes a line that you’re afraid to write.’  ‘This may be as good as it will get’ is pretty frightening… The form is a terzanelle, because I felt like using a tricky form and it seemed to fit.
