2013 Day 9 – Film Noir

He says society’s to blame
For making him a hard boiled tec.
The dame is smart. She knows his game.

The hand is dealt. It’s such a shame
He’s playing with a dodgy deck.
He says society’s to blame.

He thinks she’s just some leggy, lipsticked dame
But she can recognise a rubber cheque.
The dame is smart. She knows his game.

He has a thirst no whisky sour can tame,
A social life that’s just an empty wreck.
He says society’s to blame.

He lights her cigarette. The flame
Makes shadows of his face, his neck.
The dame is smart. She knows his game.

The scene progresses frame by frame.
We’ve seen it all before, but what the heck?
The dame is smart. She knows his game.
He says society’s to blame.

Notes: today’s prompt was to write a poem inspired by noir – I decided to make it a little more difficult by writing it as a villanelle.
